Miami Beach Gynecology: Polypectomy in Bal Harbour, FL

Polyps are abnormal growths of tissue that can form on the lining of the cervix or uterus. While polyps are often benign (noncancerous), they can sometimes be precancerous or cancerous. Polypectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove polyps from the cervix or uterus.

Understanding Polyps

Polyps are fairly common and can occur at any age. They are typically caused by an overgrowth of cells on the lining of the cervix or uterus.  While most polyps are benign, it's important to have them removed and tested to ensure they are not precancerous or cancerous.

How Does a Polypectomy Work?

A polypectomy is a simple outpatient procedure that can be performed in our Bal Harbour office. During the procedure, Dr. Paul Norris will insert a thin, lighted instrument (colposcope) into the vagina to view the cervix. A small loop of wire (LEEP) or a thin, grasping instrument (polypectomy forceps) is then used to remove the polyp. The base of the polyp may be treated with a solution to prevent bleeding. The removed tissue will then be sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Polypectomy?

If you have any of the following symptoms, you may be a good candidate for a polypectomy:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Heavy menstrual periods
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Postmenopausal bleeding

What Should I Expect During a Polypectomy?

A polypectomy is a quick and relatively painless procedure. You may experience some mild cramping or discomfort during the procedure, but this can be managed with medication. You may also experience some vaginal spotting or bleeding after the procedure.  Most patients are able to resume their normal activities within a day or two.
