A pelvic ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test used to examine the organs in your pelvis, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and bladder. This painless procedure uses sound waves to create detailed images of these organs, allowing Dr. Paul Norris to evaluate their size, shape, and overall health.
Pelvic ultrasounds are a valuable tool for diagnosing a variety of women's health conditions, such as uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and endometriosis. They can also be used to monitor egg development during ovulation tracking or during pregnancy to assess fetal health and development.
There are two main types of pelvic ultrasounds: transabdominal and transvaginal. During a transabdominal ultrasound, a transducer (probe) is placed on your lower abdomen to send sound waves into your pelvis. For a transvaginal ultrasound, a thin, wand-like transducer is inserted into the vagina to get a closer look at the organs. The sound waves bounce off the organs and create images that are displayed on a monitor.
If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you may be a good candidate for a pelvic ultrasound:
A pelvic ultrasound is a quick and relatively painless procedure. You may experience some mild discomfort during the transvaginal ultrasound, but this is usually minimal. During the transabdominal ultrasound, you will likely need to drink several glasses of water beforehand to fill your bladder, as this helps create a clearer picture of your organs.

A pelvic ultrasound typically takes about 15-30 minutes.
You can resume your normal activities after a pelvic ultrasound. There is no downtime associated with this procedure.
