Miami Beach Gynecology: Endometrial Biopsy in Bal Harbour, FL

An endometrial biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure used to collect a tissue sample from the lining of the uterus (endometrium). This sample is then examined under a microscope to diagnose or rule out various uterine abnormalities, including:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Uterine polyps or fibroids
  • Precancerous or cancerous changes in the endometrium

Understanding Endometrial Biopsy

Endometrial biopsy is a valuable tool for women experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding or other concerning symptoms. It allows for early detection and intervention of potential underlying issues.

How Does an Endometrial Biopsy Work?

An endometrial biopsy is typically performed in an outpatient setting, such as our Bal Harbour office. Here's a general outline of the procedure:

  • You will lie on a table in a similar position to a Pap test.
  • A speculum will be inserted into your vagina to gently hold the vaginal walls open.
  • Dr. Paul Norris may use a thin, flexible tube (catheter) or a small scraping instrument (pipelle) to collect a tissue sample from the endometrium.
  • Local anesthesia may be used to numb the cervix and minimize discomfort.
  • The tissue sample will be sent to a laboratory for analysis under a microscope.
  • The entire procedure typically takes only a few minutes.

Am I a Good Candidate for an Endometrial Biopsy?

If you are experiencing any of the following, you may be a candidate for an endometrial biopsy:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding, such as heavy periods, irregular bleeding, or bleeding after menopause
  • Pelvic pain
  • Difficulty becoming pregnant
  • Unexplained weight loss or gain

Dr. Paul Norris will discuss your individual situation and medical history to determine if an endometrial biopsy is the right course of action for you.

What Should I Expect During an Endometrial Biopsy?

An endometrial biopsy is a quick and generally well-tolerated procedure. You may experience some mild cramping or discomfort during the insertion of the instruments. Local anesthesia can help minimize this discomfort.  Most patients resume their normal activities following the procedure.
